Terento at the sunny Strada del Sole

Getting to know the region and the people

Terento is also called the Sunny Village. It has been proven that Terento enjoys the most hours of sun in South Tyrol. In winter the sun shines from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and in summer from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. – this is why we say "the sun never sets in Terento".

Tradition & Culture

In addition to plenty of sun, Terento has also lots to offer from a cultural point of view. Farmers' busy hands keep our landscape tidy and make sure old traditions, customs and uses are kept alive. Parades, concerts, events organised by the local fire brigade and music festivals, village church day (Kirchtag) and driving the cattle back from the pastures… all great opportunities to participate in old traditions.

The following church processions still take place in Terento:
  • On S. George's Day, patron saint of the church
  • May – stations of the cross procession to Marga
  • Corpus Christi procession
  • Sacred Heart of Jesus Sunday
  • On Mary Names Day "Pear Sunday"
  • Thanksgiving procession on the second Sunday in October
  • Pilgrimage to S. Zeno Chapel on rogation days
During church processions you can admire flags, pennons, statues, cushions and similar religious objects which are carried throughout the procession; the local music band, the fire brigade, the Tyrolean freedom fighters "Schützen" carry the tend-like "heaven" under which the priest carries the sanctum. The Gospels are read in the sports zone where the blessing is also issued. The prayer leader cross is carried at the front of the procession.

History

This area at a lower mountain range altitude was strongly cleared and cultivated by the ancient Bavarians from 800 to 1000 A.D. Most of the single farm settlements date back to this period. The landscape characterised by agricultural work has remained almost unchanged.

Population

The community of Terento comprises an area of 4,252 hectares with the harbours of Marga, Talson, Pino, Montesole, Lasta, Monteneve and Colle. The village has 1,700 inhabitants. From the 460 families living in the village, 120 are involved in agriculture, and 60 families operate guest accommodation with a capacity of 1300 guest beds.

Economy

Terento has developed from a small, rural mountain village to a growing, economically strong village where agriculture, tourism, trade and the service sectors are the main pillars of the economy.
