Hiking holidays in South Tyrol in the Puster Valley

10 tips for safe hiking and mountaineering

Stay healthy and safe when hiking on South Tyrol's Mountains! You should adhere to these recommendations:

  1. Carefully plan your hike: information on duration and level of difficulty are essential for a safe mountain adventure. Inform your relatives or your host or the owner of the hut about your target destination.
  2. Check the current weather forecast before each tour and always keep an eye on the development of the weather during your hike. The owners of the huts provide additional, useful information on the weather conditions in the near surroundings.
  3. Be objective when evaluating your stamina and choose the tours accordingly. Leave early in the morning and also plan for some extra time in order to be back before darkness.
  4. Choose a moderate and regular walking speed. Take as many breaks as you need, especially if hiking with children.
  5. Make sure you have sufficient drinks for hydration! The ideal drinks are water, tea or natural juices. You should also bring nutritious food like full-grain bread, dried fruits, nuts, and so on.
  6. Make sure you have the right equipment – especially the right shoes: proper hiking boots provide a secure grip and preserve the joints.
  7. Choose lightweight and breathable clothing and also bring a change of clothes. Never forget to bring clothes to protect you from the cold and rain. Also, a first-aid set should always be in your rucksack.
  8. Take into consideration the requirements of the weaker people in your group! Tell other hikers about possible dangers and provide first aid in case of an emergency.
  9. Treat nature with respect: Don't be boisterous; don't leave rubbish on the mountains and preserve the vegetation. Bear in mind that some plants and animals are protected by law.
  10. Always follow the sign-posts and stay on sign-posted paths. From time to time have a look at your hiking map and turn around in a timely manner if you are unsure about the route.
